In order to remove the paint from a painted surface (12), a rotating head (18) mounted in a housing (10) is used, the rotating head having nozzles (19, 20) from which high-energy jets (39) are directed against the painted surface (12). The rotating head (18) is caused to rotate by the recoil generated by the emerging jets. Mounted on the rotating head (18) is an impeller (30) which acts as a centrifugal pump to convey the liquid out of the housing (10).
