PURPOSE:Raw fibers formed from a carbonizable organic substance is allowed to include a substance that can be liberated out of the fibers on the carbonization stage, then subjected to carbonization to enable simple and inexpensive production of the titled fibers of good molecular sieve properties, because they have desired pores. CONSTITUTION:A carbonizable organic substance such as pitch, coal tar, petroleum or coal residue is extruded into fibers. Then, the fibers are placed in an atmosphere containing a substance which be liberated from the fibers on the cabonization state such as oxygen, usually with heat at 250-400 deg.C to effect the inclusion of the substance into the fibers by several to 10wt%. Finally, the resultant fibers are treated in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen at a temperature range from about 400-450 deg.C to 800-900 deg.C depending on the purpose to give the objective fibers with pores of about 3.3-10Angstrom diameters.
