PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst which makes efficient isomerization of C8 arom. hydrocarbon by subjecting a platinum group metallic component to ion exchange deposition then to a steam treatment prior to calcination in the air. CONSTITUTION:This invention relates to a process for production of a platinum group deposited zeolite catalyst effective for the isomerization of the arom. hydrocarbon, in which the platinum group metallic component is subjected to the ion exchange deposition then to the steam treatment under the temp. condition of 300-450 deg.C of gaseous phase in the presence of hydrogen prior to the calcination in the air. The resulted catalyst makes the isomerization of the C8 arom. hydrocarbon, i.e., makes the xylene isomerization reaction of an ethyl benzene at a high conversion rate and with low hydrogen consumption while maintaining the xylene loss at a low level, thus yielding paraxylene.
