SURGE SUPPRESSION DEVICE AND METHOD FOR PROTECTING ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT FROM DAMAGE GIVEN BY VOLTAGE TRANSITION

PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for an external lead wire and to miniaturize a device and reduce its weight by attaching a plug to a surge suppression device containing a structure that is made of a voltage transition limitation material and then engaging the plug to an area to a female receptacle. ;CONSTITUTION: A conductive plate 36 is provided on a main surface 34 of a MOV body 30 that is made of a metal oxide varistor, a conductive plate 38 is provided on a surface 40, and openings 42 and 44 for accepting a hot pin 16 of a plug 12 and a neural pin 18 are formed at the body 30, thus constituting a surge suppression device 10. Also, when the device 10 is used, the device 10 is engaged between the plug 12 and the receptacle 14 and the plug 12 is inserted into the receptacle 14. At this time, the pins 16 and 18 and the conductive plates 36 and 38 are electrically contacted by finger contacts 48 and 50. Then, when a voltage surge exceeding the insulation breakdown voltage of the body 30 is generated, the body 30 is damaged and a conductive path is formed between the pins 16 and 18, thus forming a short-circuiting circuit for avoiding a voltage level that may be potentially dangerous between the pins 16 and 18.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
