PURPOSE: To display an object picture quickly for a retrieval request including layout information. ;CONSTITUTION: Retrieval layout information for a picture to be retrieved is inputted by using a picture database storing a picture, similarity of an object at each area of the picture and the picture layout information. Based on the inputted retrieval layout information, the picture desired to be retrieved among sets of the picture layout information of the picture database is retrieved, the reliability of layout of the retrieval picture is calculated based on the degree of similarity of the object stored together with the retrieved picture and the information is displayed in the order of higher reliability of the calculated layout.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
