PURPOSE: To produce a useful physiologically active substance unobtainable by respective individual culture of a cultured plant cell and a photosynthetic autotrophic microorganism, e.g. a new benzoquinone-based substance useful as a food preservative by the mixed culture of both. ;CONSTITUTION: A cultured plant cell and a photosynthetic autotrophic microorganism are subjected to the mixed culture to afford the objective physiologically active substance. Specifically, e.g. a callus of Crassocephalum crepidioides S. Moore is used as the cultured plant cell and, e.g. chlorella is used as the photosynthetic autotrophic microorganism. A culture solution of the chlorella is added to a culture system of the callus of the Crassocephalum crepidioides S. Moore to carry out the culturing at 20-30°C under lighting conditions for 1-2 weeks by shaking to afford the new benzoquinone-based substance of the formula.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
