The production of a physiologically active substanceby a normal, transfected or transformed cultured cell can beincreased by culturing the cell in a culture mediumcontaining cobalt and molybdenum. The culture medium is oneordinarily selected for growing those types of cells whichproduce a desired, physiologically active substance, e.g., arecombinant growth factor of a monoclonal antibody. Whencobalt and molybdenum are included in any of these growthmedia, a substantial improvement in the production of aphysiologically active substance by the cells can be observed.Compositions and methods utilizing cobalt and molybdenum asadditives for culture media are described.
