PURPOSE: To provide an orotic acid derivative and a functional thin film prepared from the orotic acid derivative and suitable as a sensor having high substrate selectivity, a carrier to be used for the transfer and extraction of substrate, etc., a sustained release agent, a reaction field, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: An orotic acid derivative is produced by introducing a 10-22C alkyl, fluoroalkyl or their derivative group to the carboxyl group or imino group of orotic acid expressed by formula. A functional thin film having hydrophilic imide groups having controlled orientation can be produced by forming the film of the orotic acid derivative by LB method, casting method, dispersion method, etc. The orientation of the imide groups of the produced thin film is controlled by the introduced alkyl group and the film is specifically bondable with a substrate using the oriented imide group.
