PURPOSE: To prevent a current spike and perform high-speed writing by writing the state signal of a modulating element while a memory cell is fed with a specific voltage and exciting the modulating element while the memory cell is fed with another voltage. ;CONSTITUTION: Respective mirror elements of the modulating element array 10 of the spatial optical modulator are connected to memory cells which store their ON/OFF position data, and light is reflected from the mirror elements to perform operation. A shift register circuit 12 of an input unit 11 is controlled with a clock signal CLK, data loaded in the shift register 12 are transferred to a parallel latch 13, and while the data are latched, next data is loaded in the shift register circuit 12. A row selector 15 connected to the array 10 receives a row enable signal EN and a read/write signal R/W. Then a binary input feed line supplies the 1st voltage for writing to the memory cells and the 2nd voltage for operating the respective mirror elements of the array 10.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
