The present invention relates to a deletion mutant of bovine herpes virus type 1 which presents a deletion in the glycoprotein gE gene. The mutant can also present a deletion in the thymidine kinase gene and/or in the glycoprotein gI gene, or present an insertion of a heterologous gene; to a recombinant nucleic acid which includes the gE gene or a part thereof; to the glycoprotein gE, peptides based thereon and complexes formed by the glycoproteins gE and gI, and antibodies against them; to vaccines and diagnostic kits which include any one of these materials.
