This invention relates to a device and method for assisting people in changing their behaviour and in particular assisting people to stop performing an acquired behavioural response such as using tobacco products, using alcohol, or over-eating. The device and method interrupt a user`s acquired behavioural response to stimuli before a decision regarding a course of action is made. A set of symbols representing alternative responses to the acquired behavioural responses is then displayed to the user to encourage the user to perform an alternative response. The user acknowledges whether the acquired behavioural response was performed or whether one of the alternative behavioural responses was performed. The device records the number of times either response was performed for later analysis and record keeping.
