This invention is intended for improving the error performance of Forward Error Correcting (FEC) coding techniques used in bandwidth efficient digital communication channels. It consists of combining coding with two dimensional signal constellation for M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (MQAM). The novelty in this approach lies in the fact that the system architecture uses an industry standard rate 1/2 convolutional code for all values of M. This is in conjunction with new mapping and unmapping techniques and an industry standard soft decision Viterbi decoder.
