Described is an installation and method for sterilizing/decontaminating hospital waste and processing it to a secondary raw material, the method comprising the following steps: (a) the unsorted waste is fed into an externally heated container which is then partly evacuated; (b) the container is filled with steam at an overpressure; (c) the waste is subjected to a period of sterilization and a first shredding operation; (d) the waste is compressed and transferred to a compensation container; (e) the compensation container is partly evacuated and then filled with steam at an overpressure; (f) the waste is transferred to a second compensation container; (g) the waste is finely shredded and dried.
