The conventional dashboard computer (BC) is augmented with a monitor lamp controller (LA) to which readings of battery voltage (UBatt) and exterior ambient temp. (Ta) are supplied. The threshold value (Us) used for battery voltage comparison is increased in steps with the ambient temp. When the battery voltage is below the instantaneous threshold level, a signal (S) is sent to switch-on the monitor lamp (L). Advantageously a time window of e.g. about 1 min. is integrated into the comparison. ADVANTAGE - Automatic and timely indication of battery overload is given without addn. of costly and complex warning systems, so that the driver may decide which loads if any should be switched-off and when.
