Two-dimensional, carbonyl gp.-contg. aromatic cpds. (I) are claimed. (I) are obtd. by reaction of cpds. of formula (Ia) with metal carbonyls and opt. CO at above 50 deg. C and above 10 bar pressure; In (Ia) X, Y = CH2, CO, O, NH, S SO, SO2 or SS; X, Y = 0, 1 or 2 (not both zero); n = 3-250. Also claimed is the above process as such (with n = 1-250). Pref., cpds. (I) pref. have the formula (IIa) or (IIb), with X and Y as above. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful as electrically conductive materials (claimed). Applications include sensors, electrodes, thin to ultra-thin layers for optoelectronics, host mols. for molecular recognition, etc. Electrically conducting materials are pref. obtd. by doping (I) by anodic oxidn. in solns. of NaCl04 or similar salts. (I) have a properly balanced profile of suitable properties.
