A heater for a car uses the catalytic combustion of petrol with an air fan (4), a nozzle (5) for the petrol, electric heater (7) and heat exchanger (2). There are at least two catalysers (30, 31), the volume and surface area of the first being between 5% and 30% of the total catalyser volume and area. In a variation of the original design, between 20% and 80% of the air-fuel mixture can by-pass the first catalyser, the by-pass valve being opened a short time after the introduction of the mixture. The purpose of the heater is to give rapid warm-up of the cabin of the car during the short period after its engine is started when the conventional heating system is still ineffective. ADVANTAGE- No high-temperature flame and no flame noise.
