A coaxial accelerator, for axial acceleration of a magnetically confined plasma ring, has insulated coaxial inner and outer electrodes, between which is located a section with a radial static magnetic field. Further radial static magnetic field sections are arranged axially so that an axial succession of radial static magnetic field sections of alternating polarity and the accelerating azimuthal magnetic field cooperate to form a sectional resultant poloidal alternating magnetic field about the axial forwardly driven plasma ring to provide shape-stabilising confinement of the plasma ring. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. in inertial confinement nuclear fusion. The design provides shape-stabilising magnetic confinement without excessively deep penetration of the confining magnetic field.
