The lamp unit has a light source coupled to an optical fibre device (30) which transmits the light provided by the source to an optical waveguide (20a,20b,20c) for providing an output light beam with a defined light intensity distribution. Pref. the optical fibre device is coupled directly to the optical waveguide, the latter comprising a number of sub-waveguides, combined to provide a light intensity distribution with a 'hot' zone and a flat light intensity distribution. The lamp unit may comprise a number of sub-units, each providing a required light output. ADVANTAGE - Simple, compact lamp unit with efficient function.
