A thermal waste disposal system has a press (4) for the waste (A), a heated degassing channel (8) which discharges the waste as solids (F) and as carbonisation gas (G), a high temp. reactor (22) which gasifies the solids (F) to form synthesis gas (P) and which discharges a melt (S) and gases (R,G,P), a cooling unit (46) and a cleaning unit (48) for the gases (R,G,P). The novelty is that the cooling unit (46) is preceded by an arrangement (22,43) for stoichiometric combustion of the carbonisation gas (G) and the synthesis gas (P). Also claimed is a process for operating the thermal waste disposal system, in which the carbonisation gas (G) and/or the synthesis gas (P) is stoichiometrically combusted prior to cooling in the cooling unit (46). ADVANTAGE - The combustion step allows the prodn. and operating costs of the cleaning system to be reduced.
