The invention relates to a process for producing a catalyst for particle removal in the exhaust gas of diesel motor vehicles, which is distinguished by a) coating a catalyst support having a specific surface area greater than 1 m2/g onto a filter, in particular a refractory filter, and heating; b) producing colloidal platinum group metal solutions; c) impregnating the refractory filter coated in a) in the colloidal platinum solutions produced in b); d) heating the product obtained in c) at a high temperature. In addition, a process is proposed for producing a colloidal platinum group metal solution for producing a catalyst for purifying exhaust gases of diesel engines, in which the appropriate platinum group metal salt is treated with an aqueous polymer and a reducing agent. A catalyst according to the invention removes the particles by burning these at a low temperature and is effective for decreasing the formation of sulphur trioxide as a result of lower oxidation of sulphur dioxide.
