A process including a step of heating a mixture of aluminium alkoxide and hexylene glycol (2-methyl 2,4-pentanediol). Then, the solution is subjected to hydrolysis and subsequently dried and calcined. During these steps hydrolysis and dehydrating condensation of the alkoxide is controlled by the hexylene glycol. This method is found to be found effective for obtaining alumina having a uniform porous structure with a high specific surface area.
