PURPOSE:To maintain a high specific surface area even at a high temperature by reacting an aluminum alkoxide with hexylene glycol (2-methyl-2,4- pentanediol), then hydrolyzing the reaction product, gelatinizing the resultant sol, drying and calcining the gel. CONSTITUTION:(a) One mol aluminum alkoxide (e.g. aluminum ethoxide) is dissolved in (b) 0.5-5mol hexylene glycol (2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol) and thermally reacted at 101-200 deg.C. Water in an amount of 0.5-20mol based on 1mol component (a) is then added to hydrolyze the resultant reaction product and provide a sol, which is subsequently gelatinized, dried under a reduced pressure and calcined at =750 deg.C.
