A biodegradable packaging material based on at least one hot water soluble natural polysaccharide, comprising (a) the polysaccharide(s), at least one of which is a starch, (b) ca. 10-15 vol.% water, (c) an inorganic alkali salt of a proteinaceous material and (d) a hot water soluble organic plasticiser, the material being in the form of a sheet 350-2000 microns thick which can be thermoformed into rigid, non-brittle containers which can be filled with a substance having a high water content such as yoghurt etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - The materials are based on natural prods., can be processed into non-brittle rigid containers using conventional plastics processing techniques, are suitable for food contact packaging applications e.g. for yoghurt and other dairy prods., can be made heat-sealable to facilitate sealing the container with a closure after filling, are inexpensive to mfr., can be sterilised easily, are insensitive to cold water but can be destroyed after use by a natural biodegradation cycle or (esp.) by dissolving in hot water, e.g. in plain hot water or hot water contg. additives such as is found in a dish washing machine operating with a heating cycle of 60-80 deg.C.
