The invention relates to a novel, chemically crosslinked PVA. Its application is to control the filtrate in petroleum fluids, especially cement slurry, separation fluids or "spacers" and drilling muds. Its advantages are not to delay the setting of the cement and to possess high temperature properties and relatively insensitive to external conditions.
