A starting device 21 for actuating a gas generator 8 by striking a detonator 10 in response to an acceleration of a pre-determined level for use with an air bag or a seat belt retractor, comprises a firing pin 22, an inertial mass in the from of a cylindrical permanent magnet 23, an annular permanent magnet 24 and an erroneous actuation preventing mechanism 9. The mechanism 9 includes a restricting member 31 for selectively setting the inertia mass in a non-movable state and in a movable state; in the former state it prevents erroneous actuation of the starting device. The member 31 is in the form of a rotatable or slidable shaft. However, in an alternative embodiment it is formed by a spring-urged pin (131, Fig. 1c) which is moved to a position in which the inertial pass is movable, when a cover (141, Fig. 11) for a fixing bolt (144) is properly located.
