PURPOSE:To promote the reduction of the total length of an engine, by meshing a driving gear of a crankshaft with a driven gear of a balancer shaft between a main bearing cap part of a lower block and an end wall of the lower block. CONSTITUTION:An engine, providing a crankshaft 8 and a balancer shaft 9 to be arranged in a divided surface between a cylinder block 1 and a lower block 2, rotatably supports the crankshaft 8 by a main bearing, provided in a partition in the rear end, while the balancer shaft 9 by a bearing part 17. Mounting a driving gear 10 to a rear end part of the crankshaft 8 and a driven gear 11 to a rear end part of the balancer shaft 9, both the gears 10, 11 are meshed in oil return space 18 provided between a rear end wall 16 of the cylinder block and a rear end wall 26 of the lower block.
