PURPOSE:To correctly recognize a character diagram by generating a part hypothesis to affirmatively speculate respective line segments based on a specified local shape of a character graphic in the case the object of recognition is plural character graphics having similar connection constitutions of line segment, and generating a part hypothesis to negatively speculate the respective line segments in order to provide distinction among the hypothesese for a line segment group to determine a most reliable hypothesis among them. CONSTITUTION:A part afirmatice hypothesis generation means 4 generates for respective line segments stored in a line segment memory means 3 an afirmative hypothesis as to what part of a character graphic a line segment is of, based on a condition related to the connection constitutions of many line segments. Thereafter, in order to provide distinction between the hypotheses for line segment groups having similar connection constitutions, a part negative hypothesis generation part 5 generates a hypotheses as to what part of the character graphic the line segment is not of. Then, a part determination means 7 employs one most reliable hypothesis among the hypothesese generation for the respective line segments, and thus parts of respective line segments are determined. Accordingly, even when character graphics having similar connection constitutions are the object, hypotheses capable of discriminating them are generated from the line segment group. As a result, a character graphics having similar connection constitutions can be correctly recognized.
