PURPOSE:To economically constitute a system capable of corresponding to both the library control of a single hierarchy and a multilevel hierarchy by providing the titled system with a means for indexing a file name in the single hierarchy from the array of hierarchy names in a file control system sorted into the multilevel hierarchy and their file names. CONSTITUTION:The file specification of a single hierarchy or multilevel hierarchy format is processed in accordance with the classification of a work station requesting file access e.g., and in the case of the single hierarchy, the file specification of 'library name + file name' is executed similarly to the ordinary case. In the case of the multilevel hierarchy, a segmenting information file 21 is accessed by the leading library name specified by an inputted file, a hash table 22 is indexed by a hash value found out by a prescribed hash function from the inputted hierarchy name and segmenting information 23 instructed by a pointer is read out. When the file is determined by the segmenting information, single hierarchy processing is executed based on the file name, and when no file is determined, file specifying information is additionally inputted.
