PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce costs for processing confirmation of consistency of a real table and an index in a database in the middle of an online job concerning an online database management system. SOLUTION: Counters 411 and 401 for assuring compatibility are provided in the data part 41 and an index part 40 in the database 4. These counters are respectively updated when updating the part 41 and the part 40. In the retrieval of the database 4, the consistency is confirmed depending on whether these counters have the same value. When the possibility of mismatching is recognized, the part 40 is retrieved again and the consistency is confirmed again depending on the result of retrieving again.
