PURPOSE: To easily produce an alloy rod having excellent magnetostriction characteristic by holding the temp. gradient in the right angle direction of the solidified direction of molten alloy composed of rare earth element and iron, etc., and making the molten alloy the unidirectional solidification. ;CONSTITUTION: The raw material metal represented by R Tx (R is one or more kinds of the rare earth element, T is one or more kinds of iron, Co, Ni, Mn, and (x) is 1.5-2.0) is heated and melted at 1300-1600°C by high-frequency induction heating in a crucible 2 in an inert gas sealing vacuum vessel 1 and poured into a mold composed of an upper part 4 and a lower part 3 through a tundish 7 and solidified. At this time, the upper part 4 of the mold is made of Al2O3 and the lower part 3 of the mold is made of copper and the upper part of the mold is heated at about 600-1300°C while holding the temp. gradient (≥5°C/cm) in the horizontal direction of the upper part of the mold with heaters 5, 6, and the lower part 3 of the mold is cooled with water to solidify the molten alloy in the vertical direction.
