PURPOSE: To inexpensively manufacture a titanium alloy having equivalent or superior impact resistance compared to the conventional titanium alloy used for armor plates. ;CONSTITUTION: The oxygen content in the composition of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy is increased beyond the conventional limit of 0.20% maximum reported, and then the resultant oxygen rich titanium alloy is heated at temperatures within the beta-phase field. Further, this alloy is a titanium alloy having a composition limited to 5.5-6.75% Al, 3.5-4.5% V, 0.20-0.30% O2, ≤0.50% Fe, and ≤0.50% other impurities. The process for the manufacture of the alloy comprises stages of beta treatment of the alloy by heating at temperatures within the beta-phase field; working of the alloy; and further cooling and working of the alloy at room temperature.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
