PURPOSE: To execute the supply and absorption of heat to a cell under an extreme operating temperature condition by providing a heat exchanger in each cell of a storage battery, and supplying and discharging a heat-exchanger fluid at the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger. CONSTITUTION: A battery has a plurality of thin and flat heat exchangers 8, 30, 32 and each heat exchanger is opposite to the end plate of a cell. The cell bulkhead 8 itself forms the heat exchanger, and the heat exchangers 30, 32 are provided on the end partitioned chamber 6 of a vessel. Each heat exchanger has an inlet and an outlet connected to a manifold, respectively, for supplying and discharging liquids. The sectional area of each manifold is changed, whereby the flow of the heat-exchanging fluid which passes the heat exchanger can be simultaneously made into a substantially uniform and parallel flow.
