PURPOSE:To make it possible to obtain at a low cost a clear image to enable us to easily find whether there are any defects in a fuel rod or not. CONSTITUTION:This defect inspecting device has a means for irradiating a fuel rod 3 with an X-ray beam 31, an object to be inspected, and detecting elements to convert X rays into electric signals. The device is equipped with an X-ray detecting means 2 including detectors 21 and 21a to obtain a sectional image of the fuel rod 3 by detecting backward-scattered X rays 32 and 32a of the X-ray beam 31 irradiating the fuel rod 3. The X-ray detecting means 2 is equipped with slits 22 and 22a formed between the fuel rod 3 and the detectors 21 and 21a across the longitudinal direction of it. Each detecting element of the detectors 21 and 21a has a photo-detecting face extending parallel to the slits 22 and 22a, and it arranged so as to detect the X rays 32 and 32a which are scattered backward after passing through the slits 22 and 22a.
