PURPOSE: To selectively allow the adiabatic inverse excitation of even-number nuclear isotopes of Gd at a ground and a quasi-ground level and next, selectively allow the adiabatic inverse excitation at an intermediate excitation level by irradiating a Gd vapor stream with a pulse laser beam for selective excitation and a pulse laser beam for intermediate excitation, and further, irradiate the Gd with a pulse laser for ionization to obtain an adequately high separation performance. ;CONSTITUTION: A vapor stream 5 is allowed to generate by thermally evaporating a raw material 1 of Gd metal containing isotopes. Next, the Gd vapor stream 5 is irradiated with a pulse laser beam for selective excitation and a pulse laser for intermediate excitation, both of which have controlled output waveform and output timing, so that the adiabatic inverse excitation of even-number nuclear isotopes of Gd is allowed to be at a selective excitation level and next, the adiabatic inverse excitation is selectively allowed to be at an intermediate excitation level. Further, a Gd ion is allowed to generate by irradiating the even-number nuclear isotopes which have transited to the intermediate excitation level by irradiating the isotopes with a pulse laser for ionization. Then the Gd ion is collected at an electrode 6. Consequently, it is possible to obtain an adequately high separation performance on a target isotope (even-number isotope).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
