In the present invention there is disclosed an abrasive consisting substantially of calcined polycrystalline corundum obtainable by means of sol-gel process, in which the calcined corundum contains more than 0.1 percent by weight of tin, counted as tin dioxide forming a part of the polycrystalline structure. The invention further relates to a grinding tool containing the above-described abrasive and a process for producing the abrasive by employing the sol-gel process.
