The steps (11) are movably attached at their two ends and are provided with hand rails. The step tower is transported with the platforms resting one on the other as a packet. All steps and hand rails are readily assembled and collapsed between the platforms and the supporting chains. The tower is installed or removed with the aid of a lifting device (2) which is connected to lifting eyes fitted in the uppermost platform.
