MAGNESIUM IONS IN A PROCESS FOR ALKALINE PEROXIDE TREATMENT OF NONWOODY LIGNOCELLULOSIC SUBSTRATES

An improved process for delignifying andbleaching nonwoody, lignocellulosic material intoproducts digestible by ruminants and ingestible byhumans. The process comprises treating the substratein an alkaline solution for a period of time and addingmagnesium ions prior to adding peroxide or,alternatively, adding the magnesium to the peroxideprior to adding the peroxide to the alkaline slurry.
