The light intensity modulator includes a substrate 10 of optical material that conducts light and sound waves and has electro-optic and piezoelectric properties. The optical modulator is generally formed in a substrate and extends substantially in the same space with each other and comprises a pair of long and thin waveguides 11, 12 separated from each other by progressively varying transverse distances along the extension course. It consists of a gender interferer. Different phase shifts are induced by imposing a variable electric field on each waveguide by electrodes 21, 22 and 23. Since the spacing of the waveguides changes along the extension of the waveguide, the piezoelectric effect eliminates the tendency to occur during operation of the modulator, causing resonance between the waveguides at a particular frequency and correspondingly reducing noise distortion.
