The data entry device having position detector means for computer input comprises a panel and an array of first detector means extended along the panel. The sensing means will sense the position of the indicator which can move arbitrarily towards and along the panel. The indicator indicates interaction with the first detector means. Sensing includes the screening of a particular one of the first detector means and the detection of the actual transfer function of the selected means. By iterative sequencing through various means of the first detector means, the current position coordinates of the indicator are found. In particular, the sequencing begins with a subset of the first detector means indicative of a likely location of the indicator means given by past experience. The sequencing ends as soon as the current position is detected.
