German Patent Application (P4306875.8) describes a process for producing spherical particles based on inorganic oxides, inter alia aluminium oxide, in which a liquid alkaline component is combined with a liquid acidic component to form a sol, the sol is converted into droplet-shaped sol particles, the sol particles are solidified by contacting with a reaction gas and introduction into a reaction liquid and, in a subsequent work-up stage, aged, washed, dried and, if appropriate, calcined, the sol particles being injected from below into the reaction gas and after passing through a curved flight path are collected in the reaction liquid. It has now been found that such supports, coated with palladium or palladium and copper are outstandingly suitable as catalysts in a process for eliminating or decreasing the oxygen, nitrite and/or nitrate content in aqueous systems.
