The invention relates to a method of producing patterned, coloured motifs and structures and a colour image assembled from these motifs. In order to produce coloured motifs and structures and a colour image which may be assembled therefrom, paints based on nitrocellulose or alkyl resin are applied, by a spraying method, to a liquid, untreated paint base, preferably water, and partially hardened to form a micro-paint layer which, after completion of the partial hardening, is transferred by mechanical means and/or by the application of solvents and/or by the application and partial hardening of further applications of paint, and subsequent skimming, onto a support material. The motifs or structures can be used for an individual representation or assembled to form a colour image, in which case, after drying of the support material, the applied design is fixed, for example, by application of a colourless coating layer.
