The office, surgery etc. (9) in a street-corner building (8) is equipped with a transmitter (10) and antenna (12) giving a range (11) of about 1 km. Each person (38) arriving for an appointment is given a portable paging receiver and battery taken from one of e.g. six compartments contg. inductive battery-chargers fed from a common power supply. Anyone carrying such a receiver can walk about neighbouring streets (2-7) until recalled to the building by a personally encoded transmission (46) which triggers a visual or audible signal (36) and optionally a message signifying, e.g. remaining waiting time.
