Bicycle pedal drive with torque maximisation

A pref. spring loaded rocking arm, fixed to the axle of a pedal arm, connects the pedal arm with a toothed gear wheel. A fixed disc adjacent to the rocking arm has a raised portion which acts on the arm over a predetermined sector of its circular path, removing the link to the gear wheel. This sector is chosen to correspond to the period when torque is low. The pedal arm can therefore move on quickly towards an optimum sector, when the torque is restored automatically.
