The drive system has an auxiliary motor (5), a drive wheel (2) which is driven by the auxiliary motor, a pedal (8), and a unit (9) for detecting an actual torque (M-P) at the pedal and an actual velocity of a bicycle (1). A controlling- or regulating unit (7) is connected with the pedal and the auxiliary motor such that a desired velocity, target of the bicycle and a desired angular acceleration of the drive wheel are controlled and regulated as a function of the detected actual torque at the pedal and the detected actual velocity of the bicycle. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a bicycle.
