The method involves detecting a drive torque and rotational speed of a pedal drive of an electric bicycle. A braking torque is generated via an electric brake or by turning off an electric drive of the electric bicycle. The braking torque is produced when the sign of the torque, speed or both variables is negative. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for operation of an electric brake of an electric bicycle, and for use in a power supply device; (2) a power supply device; and (3) an electric drive train for driving an electric bicycle.
