A process is disclosed for making substantiallysolvent free quaternary ammonium compounds using fatty acids,amines and quaternizing agents without side reactions thatwould produce esters of fatty acids. A relatively smallamount of a water-alcohol solvent is used in the quaternizingreaction after which a fatty acid is added and the solventremoved by sparging and/or vacuum.
