The invention provides a force-transmitting flexible member (10) of the "Bowden" type comprising a force-transmitting cable (12) mounted slidingly in a sheath (16, 18) and a device (14) for automatically adjusting the length of the sheath, characterised in that the adjusting device (14) comprises two adjusting elements (28, 38) mounted slidingly with respect to one another, an adjusting spring (56) which stresses the two elements, in sliding, in the direction corresponding to lengthening the sheath and means (52) for automatically locking the two elements in the adjusted position, which means act by wedging under the effect of a longitudinal compressive force applied to the sheath (16, 18).
