PURPOSE: To estimate an accurate total grip force by selecting a larger one of a first total grip force obtained from an acceleration of a vehicle and a second total grip force obtained by considering a frictional coefficient of a road surface. CONSTITUTION: A longitudinal grip force as a time differential value is calculated from a vehicle speed obtained by a vehicle speed calculating means 32 by a longitudinal grip calculating means 34. Also the longitudinal grip force and a lateral acceleration of a vehicle output by a lateral acceleration detecting means 4 are input into a grip control means 35, and a first total grip as the sum of vectors of these values is obtained. Then, in the grip control means 35, the first total grip force and a second total grip force obtained by considering a frictional coefficient of road surface based on a vehicle speed and a drive speed are calculated. Finally a larger one of the first and second total grip forces is selected as the final total grip force.
