PURPOSE: To enable the execution of works up to a deep place. ;CONSTITUTION: The first open shielding machine 11 of comparatively low left and right sidewall boards 11a, 11b and the second open shielding machine 12 of high left and right sidewall boards 12a, 12b are combined before and behind while the upper edge levels of the open shielding machines are approximately equalized. The ends of propulsion jacks 12 are engaged with the machine body of the second open shielding machine 12 in the first open shielding machine 11, soil and sand are excavated and removed from the front or top face of the first open shielding machine 11 by a first shovel system excavator 16 arranged on the ground, and the first open shielding machine 11 is moved forward. Soil and sand in the front lower half section of the second open shielding machine 12 are excavated and removed by a second shovel system excavator 17 disposed on the bottom of the first open shielding machine 11, propulsive reaction is obtained in an existing concrete caisson body 4, and the second open shielding machine 12 is forwarded by propulsion jacks 14.
