PURPOSE: To provide a battery free from environmental pollution and requiring no charge by using an electrically conductive material reactive with H in a negative electrode, a material less reactive with H+ but passing an electron in a positive electrode, and a liquid which dissociates to release H+ in an electrolyte. ;CONSTITUTION: A material with low ionization tendency, preferably carbon is used in a positive electrode, a material with high ionization tendency is used in a negative electrode for high voltage, and use of water or seawater is allowable as an electrolyte. Two kinds of electrodes are immersed in the solution to produce a water battery. Since electromotive force of the water battery is produced by the reaction represented by equations I and II, electric power is generated while electrode materials and water exist. When the electromotive force is decreased by decrease in H concentration in the electrolyte and stick of hydroxides on the electrode attendant on repeated discharge, the electromotive force is recovered by supplying an acid and brushing or ultrasonic cleaning of the electrode. The water battery is optimum as a power source of maritime applications, especially for sending distress signals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
